The Gatsby Benchmarks
What Are the Gatsby Benchmarks?
The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of eight key standards designed to define world-class careers guidance in schools and colleges across England.
Why Were They Created?
Commissioned by the Gatsby Foundation in 2013, led by Sir John Holman, the benchmarks were developed to answer the question: “What does good careers guidance look like?”
The research drew on international best practices from countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada.
The aim was to improve the quality and consistency of careers education and reduce the number of young people becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
When Were They Introduced?
The benchmarks were officially published in 2014.
They became part of statutory guidance in England in 2018, meaning all secondary schools and colleges were expected to use them to shape their careers programmes.
Why Were They Updated?
In 2024, after a decade of implementation, the Gatsby Foundation conducted a two-year review involving schools, colleges, employers, and careers professionals.
The world of work and education had changed significantly—technology, labour markets, and student needs had evolved.
The updated benchmarks, published in the report “Good Career Guidance: The Next Ten Years”, were designed to:
Reflect current best practice
Clarify expectations
Ensure continued relevance for the next decade
